About the Gastrointestinal Physiology Service

We investigate symptoms affecting both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, helping patients and clinicians better understand the causes of symptoms and supporting decisions regarding treatment and management.

Our team uses modern diagnostic technologies and follows national and international guidance to ensure high-quality testing, reporting and patient care. We work closely with gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, upper gastrointestinal surgeons, specialist nurses and other healthcare professionals through multidisciplinary team meetings to support safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Conditions We Investigate

We assess patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal symptoms and conditions, including:

• Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
• Heartburn and reflux symptoms
• Regurgitation
• Non-cardiac chest pain
• Achalasia and other oesophageal motility disorders
• Constipation
• Difficult bowel emptying
• Faecal incontinence
• Pelvic floor dysfunction
• Obstetric anal sphincter injury
